View Full Version : Is my engine overheated?

I ran my car like 12 tanks already... and this happens since last 3 tanks (previous 9 tanks, i was troubleshooting the engine coz of the irregular and low rpm).
When i ran it just now.. it was fine.. fast, good torque.. bla bla bla... then after using up quater of the tank, the rpm would be like normal, then low, then normal again... then low again then died... :furious
What could be the problem here? Overheated?
I know Singapore is a damn Humid and Hot country... :fire:
rich up the bottom end and change the plug.
after you run in the engine always change the plug.
make sure your pressure tube is not stuck or clamped.

haha ... joker.. :hammer
I have exactly the same issue previously on the MT2 - when on high, the engine is running real shiok iniitially then either dies or goes inconsistent after a run of 15mins. Then I richen the high and its ok.... Now... when the engine just starts, it takes a couple of minutes to go to good power but after the warmup the thing is performing well.
I got a over-heating problem too, mainly cause by the high nitro content I am using (25%). Want can I do to compensate it? use a colder plug? I already blew 2 plugs within the 800ml of nitro... (1 stock + 1 OS8).
on my MT2 when I went up to 20%, I made the high needle richer to compensate. Was not terminally overheating but if I stop the engine had to wait about 5 minutes before restarting. If keep refueling can go on for more than 5 tanks with no problems. But wanted to slow down the MT2 via a richer setting (due to retarded fingers) so I did the tuning when I went to 20%.
I only had 1 plug change after 2 bottles of fuel (the bigger one but dunno in terms of quarts).

Im using 25% as well.. Thats what Tai Sing recommend me...
I think i need to change the plug coz I havent changed mine.
What glow plug u all recommend?
I tot my MT2 manual suggests 20%. Already that is really fast for me. Maybe you guys got more nimble fingers......

i dun think your 25% nitro is the problem. I have been using 25% previously and i never had such problem

OS #8 glow plug how much ah?
My workplace is 5mins walk to Tai Sing... think will get it later during coffee break.
According to Traxxas... the engine is not designed to use anything more than 20% and is not recommended... that's why I thought 25% rich until full of smoke still super hot a little too much leow.
yeah.. maybe I go buy a 10% and mix them up to get 18% or something..... :bh

Have you tried richen the low?
Is your idle needle screwed in too much? If so, your low end is too rich.
Lots of smoke may be due to the fuel you using.
Hope it helps

I got the OS8 glow plug installed and richen the low end to ½ clockwise turn. Still have overheating issue ley...
richen = lean out?
coz the manual says turn ½ clockwise to lean out. :confuse:

Of course it still overheat, clockwise means 'leaning'. :L :L :L Turn anti-clockwise 3/4 turn from your present position and see. Maybe you want to reset the needles to stock position and go from there.
To richen is to increase the fuel in the air:fuel mixture. To lean is the other way round.

No lah.....low end is for adjusting fuel mixture near idle. :L :L :L
Maybe this (http://www.nitromonkey.com/tuning.shtml) might help. :up

huh???
I read it at HPI FAQ, it says that the more lean ur engine is... the more tendancy u will get to destroy the engine... so which is which now?

Engines
My engine isn't old but it's "worn out", why?
Things that cause the engine to wear quickly:
Improper air filtration
Running too lean
Not enough cooling
Cheap fuel
The solutions:
Improper air filtration... keep your air filter clean and oiled, upgrade to a high performance air filter if you run in areas with excessive dust. You'd be amazed at the engines that we see come in with dirt all over the inside of the engine. See the KITS--> "Why you need to care for your engine" link.
Running too lean... adjust the carb as often as needed so that you see a nice trail of smoke at FULL SPEED. The 15FE is pre-set and not adjustable on the bottom end setting, so it will always smoke enough at low to mid speed. Running it too lean on the top end will overheat the engine.
Not enough cooling... cut out your body windows according to our instructions. If you don't have enough airflow over the head you won't be able to keep the engine cool. It is highly recommended that you purchase some sort of temperature gauge, engine temperatures over 250F will cause the engine to wear quickly.
Cheap fuel... don't buy $10/gallon fuel that is blended for airplanes. Car fuel is designed for cars, the oil blend is different than helicopters and airplane fuel. Not all car fuels are the same, some have less oil than others. HPI Power fuel has 14% oil, which is a good balance. Too much oil will bog down the engine at idle and decrease performance, not enough oil will make the engine wear more quickly. Car fuel labeled "Race" usually has a little less oil, it is intended for maximum performance at the expense of engine life. If you are driving off-road you really don't need a "Race" blend. The fuel is what lubricates and cools the engine, don't skimp on quality.

Think it's better to loctite the throttle screw at the carb. I've encountered someone with the same problem. That screw can become loose easily. :z

 :z :L :L :L Yah, memory is still fresh, especially when gunning the throttle lever results in no change in the carb opening. :L
Finally got time for some R/C activity this morning.
I richen both the high speed (0.125) and low speed (about 5minutes)
prob seem to have went away... :L :up
