For fun: Model heli and model plane cost comparisons

loyn was saying rc can be a monetary black hole that sucks up all our money...and i was saying especially helicopters!

So here's a rough cost comparison between some model helis and some planes.minus radio.I'm not looking at the cheapest of the cheapest possible components but i'm considering similar quality stuff for both instances

I'm also considering reasonable, cheaper options in terms of planes and helis.for example i'm not going to consider a full FG stinger or VIP pylon racer as a typical speed400 plane or a fliton jumping jack for a s300 parkflyer

I'm going to be getting a zoom soon so this is particulalry relvant to me.painfully so....

Zoom 400 kit from Fung or hornet 2 360
needs esc gyro and FOUR micro servos total about $602
    need 1200 to 1500mah lithiums

Fedaish micro china FP dual motor affair typically 150
needs 2 esc gyro and 2 micro servos total about $327
same sort of batteries as above

Speed 300 class parkflyer: let's consider cheaper GWS foam fighter or formosa ARF: 70-80
needs esc and 3 micro servos about $195
Can go pretty good for reasonable duration on lithiums nicd or nimh
    1 zoom/hornet = 3.1 GWS parkflyers !
1 china FP micro heli = 1.6 GWS parkflyers

Speed 400 class powered ARF : 120 ( let consider cheaper planes like a cinnamon sailplane from SHS, built up wing and empennage ABS fuse , and or $100 foamy microjet kit ) needs esc 2 mini/micro servos
    $196

runs on 7-8cell kan950 nimh or sanyo 600AE .( approx $15 homemade or $27 readymade).I fly my MJ on similar 2/3A 950mah nimh 7cell for up to 12 mins of powerconserving flight. Sailplanes+similar pack + thermal flying up to 40 mins ( and i'm relatively cock at searching for lift some folk i know can go for as long as they want)

    1 zoom/hornet = 3.07 cinnamons or MJ !
i china FP micro = 1.6 Cinnamon or MJ

For this also, you can always build up your own from a balsa kit or from scratch for even cheaper , and even more satsifaction

It's a long list of comparisons but it all boils down to what you want!

Will you be happy flying the cinnamon, which basically only allows you to float around?

The MJ is fun, but I have witnessed too many premature demises and many failed attempts to get it in the air.

Helis are more expensive but still repairable in a bad crash.

Life is full of Tough Decisions, huh?

      hmm....

      R50V2 - $655 ( Rotor )
      GY401/9253 - $300 ( Chan )
      Hitec 645MG x 3 - $66.60 ( Rotor )
      R149DP - $225 ( Rotor )
      Hitec 425 - $30 ( Rotor )
      other accessories - $200

That's all I spent in Oct 2003...seven mths later today...I'm doing aerobatics flying and some 3D.....hmm......

That's a very bright way of looking at it, Art.

DErrick, ya missed out Land Space. Either way it's all always to do with the availability of air/landspace.....

Planes did bigger fields. Helis: Need i say more? Either way we are going to pay for landspace for either side.

It may really hurt to down a heli, but then it ain't that fun to patch up a cool looking planker with tape either.

Hmm i think i'm giving the wrong impression of trying to imply that planes are better than helis- that's definately not the case hahaha i love rc helis !

I think helicopters are jam packed with amazing fun, and relatively convenient in terms of flying sites like Ray mentioned.

So much so in fact i think they are well worth the cost haha. Especially if the cost is reasonable like for Arts' r50 !

Like han said, it's all up to what you want:
The same way i cant hover my cinnamon inverted, i wont be able to thermal and range out a zoom. The best thing is to play with both !

I've noticed a few of us here who only fly helis seem to think that "starting with planes" brings with it a huge investment or a big world of costs like startign with helis.

So that's i am trying to get at, that planes are pretty cheap compared to heli and that those interested should try it .

Hey han for me i've had no significant problems with launching my MJ on brushed (there was once i nearly threw my transmitter the other way in my gusto though...i'm really quite cock) , though i do realise so many people have given up on theirs like you said.

In fact, that's the only reason i have my MJ haha!
This guy kept smasing it up on launch and after getting tired of gluing it all the time, gave it to me.

happens to me too, like when i've got a ball and a racket and i wanna serve.... Then instead the racket goes flying instead of the ball.....

I do fly planes, you name it I have it......that is only on part time basics. Fly them only when I feel like it.

Full time is Heli. Ops did not mentioned that the planes I fly is on G2
