digital servos much better than the steppers we use leh ... I think there is some kind of gyro within the system to act as feedback to maintain the x,y,z coordinates.
But you realize that what it is cutting is something that is very soft, i think it is clay or some kind of power solid. If not that stupid China motor (looks like himark to me) sure will have problems cutting it one. Also, when it drills into the surface, there will be some force pushing against the robot, hence it will tilt up a bit. there must be some kind of feedback system to make sure that the z-coordinates is accurate.

there are no feedback gyros or IMUs in the robot. It actually uses a technique called Inverse Kinematics to calculate the position for all of its 18 HSR5995TG servos in order to achieve the desired position for the robot and its cutting bit
to clear your doubts, its actually cutting high density foam

OMG, i jus google and 1 HSR5995TG servo produce 417 oz/in of torque. And each cost a whopping US$114
Ok, I know nuts abt robots but interested to understand what is the controller on this 6 legged robot to run the so call Inverse Kinematics system .. I am thinking if I use 3 servo on an axis, can i make use of this system to make a simple XYZ small area engraving platform.

HSR5995TGs are a little overkill... A good quality digital servo with decent torque should do the job you require.
By the way, this guy's robot became so popular he actually started selling them... You can do a google search for his company "Micromagic Systems" and "B.F. hexapod" robot
