    Help with Triton

Hi all, i've been scouring the 5 pages of this forum on chargers for info on the Triton but i'm still blur

I just got my Triton yesterday. Been reading the manual over and over and the more I read, the more confuse I become. Till I finally decided to hands on. I connect 6-cell pack (sub-C) to the charger. Powered by Lead Acid 12V batt. After reaching 800 plus mah, the charger stops, then it show'DLY" on the screen, then after sometime it shows "top"....why is this happenning? My 6-cell pack is 3300mah.
Also, when i discharge the same pack, the voltage went all the way to below 5.4v (the value i set for the cut-off). Why does this happen?
Also, I'm looking for a very compact unit pf PS to power up the charger. Any suggestion? PS size of the Triton is definitly a plus but giving out 13A or more. Anyone? Thank you all. Sorry for the long essay.

One more thing, what are the typical values you guys set in the charger for the different batterries? Any inputs is appreciated.

DLY meant that it's giving the battery a break...coz it might have detected the voltage peaking, but the sensitivity of the voltage per cell that you've set cause it to DELAY the charge so as to not falsely detect the peak.

TOP means top up charging...this is done when peak is confirmed, and in the setup menu, you can turn it off....I prefer to off top-up charging coz once top-up is activated, i will lose all info on how much current have been put into my packs....

As for your discharge, you've probably set discharge voltage per cell to be 0.9v/cell, thus 0.9v x 6 cells give you 5.6v...and the charger will auto stop at 5.6v.

My settings for NiMH Sanyo packs.....sensitivity 5mV...anything lesser & your packs will start to become overheated during peaking....if using GP3300 cells, sensitivity should be put to 6mV coz Gp cells get heated up very very fast....no good for the packs...

Also, NiMH cells likes to be fast charged....Normally i charge at 1.0C to 1.5C depending on how fast I want to use my cells....I find that it is a bit pointless to discharge NiMH packs coz there's virtually no memory effects...so by doing that, you're actually shortening your batt's lifespan....

Only cycle your batts when you find that performance have somehow dropped...this is my own pref. coz i know lots of rc car racers like to cycle their batts to death....coz they got money to buy matched cells and keep cycling the batts just to give them a 5-10% increment in batt performance.

Oh yes, as for the powersupply, there's this Korean made PS unit that is pretty small....rated up to 20A...made by Team Much-More Racing....It's called Power Master 20A or something....available in alu-anodised blue, red & black......Winnie sells them, but subject to order i think....

Characterised by blue LEDs, and two powerful fans for cooling....a bit expensive for the price at about $220+ if i recall correctly... I'll try to find the link...

Wah..that is extensive and very useful info. Thank you very much. I wil experiment further with the info you provided.
Anyone else got other settings to share?

adjust the default setting of the charger to your batt pack and not 1000 mAh.

initially, I kept charging my 1800mAh batt but it stops at 1000maH

That's the preset safety feature.....Triton charger got 3 cutoff functions...

Cutoff by Temp (u need temp sensor)
Cutoff by timer (i set mine to 480mins coz sometime i charge overnight)
Cutoff by amp limit. ( i set mine to 4000mah coz my packs are about 3600mah)

I had this prob until I realised I didn't read the instruction book properly and thus didn't configure the max Amp cut off during my 1st few attemps to charge.
                  huh

Press Menu until you see "Buzzer Melody XX"
Turn wheel until you see "Safety Timer"
Press wheel.....and the Minute field blinks....turn wheel until desired value.

Keep scrolling and change the settings until your "Buzzer Melody XX" shows up again....then press Batt Type to resume your charging functions.

One of the menu states: peak Delay at start:
                        Wat does this mean?

Peak delay at start is a function to prevent immediate false peaking.....when high current is pumped into batteries, especially in re-peaking recharge, batteries might reach the peak voltage in an instant....

this function tells the charger to ignore any peak detection within the time u preset and continue pumping current into the batts.

Thanx dude. That was fast. Now if only I can get my hands on a Team Much More power supply...I can pump more amps into my Nimh...

Erm...i dun understand why you sold your Eagle CDC charger...that's a better charger than Triton in charging NiMH & NiCD packs...
