I am new to this hobby. Wanted to start with a nitro truck but with no knowledge at all, should I buy the Savage X 4.6 RTR or E Savage?
I understand that with the E Savage, I can run it immediately with 7.2V stick batteries which comes with it. With the Savage X 4.6 RTR, how where can I learn how to start the engine, tune it and maintain it after playing? Can I play the Savage X at HDB carpark and void deck or I need to go to certain locations?
I hope some kind soul can help as this will be my first truck purchase and I really need some advise before spending my money.
Thanks in advance.

hey there... im also new here.. i plan on starting a new hobby, and bashing really interests me alot... but i dunno if i should go for an electric powered or nitro power...
hope there are kind souls who can enlighten us...
Hi I am new also , me started electric first then nitro.
Ok for nitro is shiok man as I can say, the power, the smell of the nitro and the sound. But one thing bad about nitro is that it require tuning of engine and lots of maintainers of the buggy, truggy or monster truck. And it cant be play at the car park or under the void deck, as it is quite loud . And the nitro will be quite messy when you go mud bushing , but is shiok.
As for electric , you can play anywhere . All you need is charge your batt and you are ready to go. But one bad point about electric is the running time is too short. So you need to stand by a few batt pack with you, if you plan to go to far place and play. For high mah batt pack is not cheap.
So prepair to burn a big hole in your pocket.
Cheers, hope this help.

Ket, since you are new too, where did you learn your skills in playing and maintaining the Nitro trucks? Any As the Savage is not cheap, I want to make sure I make the correct choice in buying either the electric or nitro version. Where do you normally play? I stay in the east. Is the fuel for the Nitro expensive - I mean running cost? Thanks for the reply.

I stay in the west, my friend stay in the west too. He know alot about RC, so I learn from him. Since you stay in east, you can go to Punggol off road track and play with us. Log on to RCtech.net/forum, and go to Singapore Racer and you will see Punggol Off Road Track (PORT). There are lot of beautiful photo and video there .Take a look .
As for Nitro or Electric is really up to you to decide, as I can say nothing is cheap in the RC world.
The nitro is ok not very expensive for me, but for you I dont know.
The cheapest is around $30 plus per gallon, and the most expensive is around $70 plus per gallon. (1 gallon= 3.75L). If you are not playing everyday 1 gallon can last you about 3 month.
Hope all the above help.
Cheers:D

Hi, I will suggest getting an electric one. Yes, electrical components cost high upfront. But the parts are virtually maintenance free. And there is nothing to wear out on the electrical parts (except for the motors).
Get good battery packs (I will really suggest lipo that is capable of at least 120A continuous current - will run without any heat - So that the batteries will last long). The stock batteries will burn themselves out one day even with the stock esc. The stock packs on stock motors and esc will last about 10 min of hard driving.
Get like 6 packs for 30 min?

Cheers:D $30 plus per gallon for the cheap one sounds reasonable. So are u using the cheap one or expensive one? What is the difference? Power output? So if it is a Savage X 4.6, which is the recommended fuel to buy since there are cheap and expensive ones? I think the most I can play is probably 2-3 times per week with my son who is in Pri 2.

Get like 6 packs for 30 min? I agree electric one seems to be a good choice since most of the weekdays I will probably be playing with my son in void decks and HDB carparks. Maybe I should consider buying a cheap electric truck for my son while I get the Nitro for myself :) This will be the best of both worlds but I will need deeper pockets. Anyway, does anyone know what is the best price for the E Savage and Savage X4.6 at local hobby shops?

Depand on yourself, if you have enough money go for the normal grade one. And also depand on weather you want to go for race or just bash around having fun. If for racing surely must go for the high end one, and your engine also must be high end in order to win the race.
For me I use normal one (Blue Thunder $47-$49/gallon). Me two can only play 2-3 times per week. But that alot, some play only once a week.
I last went to Taising (HPI) is on April this year, and the Savage 4.6 is $950. And for E-savage is $590.
Cheers
anyway guys, is the Kyosho 1/8 GP GIGA CRUSHER SF a good buy? there is also another with dual engines... is it worth the buy?
Hi, first you see what you want? Buggy, truggy or Monster Truck. If you want buggy (Normal one) go for Hobao Hyper7 or Hyper 8. Or also go for Hong Nor, both made in Taiwan and their parts are cheap and easy to find.
If you want dual engine, there is one more from HotBodies. Worth buying a not I dont know so sorry.
Go to RCtech.net/forum or Rcuniverse.com and see. From there you will get more info.

I am new and playing for fun only, so only normal grade will do. I just found out that the Savage 4.5 RTR not is selling for $1050 with 5% discount during this GSS. Wow, is it a price increase or is it the wrong model that I m looking at.

HI Bro,
Care to share what's included in the $650 deal?I asked Sunny and was quoted $750 for the pro kit w/o engine and electronics.Sunny's the man, always helpful although I don't run Hong Nors.
Jinspade and Annapurna,
Come down this SUnday to Punggol and see what we are playing.Mostly buggies but there are truggies and monster trucks as well.As for electric or nitros, most will start with electric because of cleanliness and ease of play but once you get the hang of it,nothing beats the nitros.I see both of you are more inclined towards monster trucks so my advice, nitro!

Will be at Ponggol after 10am and will bring my son along. Will see whether electric or Nitro is more suitable and hope to learn from all you experts there. Yes, I am inclined towards monster truck because as a newbie, it is likely that I will have more accidents with the truck and it seems to be more rugged.

Sorry, more questions to ask before I make my final choices.
If I go for the Savage X4.6 RTR, what other accessories/stuff that I need to buy to make it run? What are the parts that will usually get damaged that needs to be replaced often? Are these parts difficult to get?
The only accessories I have now are two 7.2V rechargeable batteries and a Tamahzo T15 charger. Nothing else.

For that you need the basic like t spanner, fuel bottle, spare glow plug and glow starter. And one more is AA batt 12 pcs, or can get the rechargeable batt. And for AM tx becareful of freq crush. The part can get from Taising.

Reverse module to me is not a necessity as they are there as an option to make the truck able to reverse. There are so many nitro cars out there that are not equipped with these,so no worries if you do not have them. However,it would be nice to be able to reverse your nitro car when all others are stuck!:L
As for the 7.2V battery that you have, you might want to consider keeping it if you want to use the rotostarter and a Tahmazo charger?AN overkill for ocassional bashing but good to have if you are using good rechargable batteries.Keeps it in it's optimum chargable state.

Hi Thangmo, I am more leaning towards getting the Savage X 4.6 RTR after talking to all of you folks on the benefits of using Nitro. If I get the Savage X, is it necessary to get the Hump battery (for receiver) and the temperature gun? I read in the instruction manual (from the website) that the temp gun is required for tuning and running-in. What else do I need to get on top of this gear. I m just trying to gauge all the stuff that i need to buy for the initial start-up and the cost of it.

Rechargeble batteries are essential if you are running offroad as the servos are usually hi-torque.They do consume more power than their weaker siblings.Unless you don't mind changing the alkaline batteries every 4-5 runs.Since you have the Tahmazo charger, why not fully utilise it?Those humpback cost anything from $28 onwards.
Temp gun?You dun need it unless you are running a few cars on your own all the time.We do have temp guns,so just bash around with us and use it for free. With the savings, you can buy another humpback.:D
You saw today at PORT the closely knitted family who shares starters and glow heaters rite?Dun worry about all these.most importantly you must get the car that you feel comfy with.

Thangmo, thanks once again for the value-added advice:) I'm indeed impressed with the close knit family at PORT. Will get a car soon (hopefully in Aug) and join all of you. Meanwhile, my son and me will join you again this Sun but with a much smaller car but with an additional battery and he is enjoying every moment with it.

I was there running my Hellfire and saw the whole drama. So sad that you have to stop bashing.Sorry didn't intro myself coz too busy enjoying my bash till I break the piston.
Annapurna,
Yeah,I think monster trucks are more durable and for forgiving for a regular bash but still the internals are prone to damage due to the massive weight and power.See you tomorrow!
Thangmo, how about the Hellfire? I was looking at the HPI website and it look pretty cool. How much is it and is it easy to maintain and run? Is it better to get this truck compared to the Savage X 4.6 and I believe it is RTR?
