    Lathe

Hey guys, my first post here .

Im from Malaysia and im not really into the radio control hobby , though im always mopping up my drool when i see these things fly..

    neway heres a few questions,

    1) how much does a lathe costs ? Some thing that can mill 3.5"diameter x 8" long copper stocks.

    2) wat kind of Cutter/bits do i need for copper?

    3) does a lathe run on alot of electricity? do i need to have good elecricity ? like some machinery require industrial wiring. ( ill be running it at home

    4) is there a good cheap lathe and mill combo? i was researching the sherline lathes and the have an accsorie that adds verticle drilling to their lathe.

    5) does the chipping from turning fly far away? is cleen up easy?

    6) do i need to cool down the cpper lathes while milling?

    7) is the costs of bits/cuter expensive if i mill quite frequently, do they break easily?

    8) is this diy lathe recomended? does it work well? http://www.instructables.com/id/100%25-Homemade-Lathe/
or am i beter off getting a real lathe.

    ................

btw is there anyone who has acces to a lathe than can help me mill some copper parts? i have solidwork drawings if needed.
im looking for a cheap lathe that is able to mill copper stock 3.5" diameter and 8" long .. pm me or msn me.. thx

      hello there,

for that size stock i dun think any hobbygrade lathe can handle, unless you custom fab some sort of attachments for your saddle and tailstock.

def dun bother trying to build your own....very dangerously dude, you could seriously hurt yourself. besides working on wood (like in that link) and working on copper two different things, copper is soft but not THAT soft.

looks like you'll need a full size lathe....imo lah

bro, why dun send it to the shop and ask them to turn it for u? coz for the copper which u going to turn will need a medium lathe machine. even a medium lathe may virbrate if it's turning too fast. last time when i'm a toolmaker i've seen my colleagues using the turning table but results is not tht good...

there are plenty of engineering shop in Malaysia. Depending on where do you live. You can aproach them and give them your drawing to request for a quote...

I think, if you ask who knows the operator, it is weird since most of the forumers are based in SG. So, for them to know any operators or shop in Malaysia maybe slim.. unless across the causeway..

Keep looking around your area.. I am sure you can find them.
P/S.. engineering shops usually located in light / medium industrial area....

ahh .. i dun mind getting sg shops to do... umm if u guys want my drawing i can email it to u guys. i have aproached a couple of shops around, but they charge rediculous prices.. coz they just refuse to work with copper. i know copper is gummy so the machinists don like it.. but i was wondering is there any? any sg shops?

you cannot fit that directly onto a sherline. I sell one of those too

If you get a Sherline lathe and that chuck. Very good chance you can make an adaptor yourself so that this chuck can be fix onto a sherline lathe.

Let I had mention, even you get the chuck and presume you are able to clamp your 3" copper, the next problem you face is a cutting tool long enough to reach 125mm deep in.

                      Cheers
