    Safety at JW flying field

I just like to bring out the safety awareness at JW flying field. We know that the field is almost ideal for RC flying, is big with 3 different section and is rather isolated from HDB area. At the same time, is a dead end road, which provide FOC parking and easy access. However, the major concern of the field is that it lay right across the landing path of SAF air base. Hence so often we will encounter low flying aircraft. When I say low it is very low ! In the past , we will keep a constant look out for any incoming plane and land or stop all flying till we are sure no aircraft activities. This is to ensure we RC flyer will not cause any potential danger to our bigger brother. This is the first rule at JW field, and is our individual responsibility to ensure we follow the safety regulation. The field is a public place and is not being identified for RC flying. We use it at our risk without permission from the authority, that can be an offend in the first place. If what we do further endanger the public or other regulated body (SAF, School, HDB) Then we are asking for trouble, not only to individual but to the entire RC community of Singapore.

Why I bring it out is because today evening at JW field we encounter some concern over a group of RC flyer. There was a Heli (not RC but SAF real stuff) approach for landing over the field. Instead of landing their RC plane , they kept on flying till the heli fly pass them…..That is totally unacceptable unsafe act ! Not sure what are they thinking, fun I don’t think so. Think about what would happen if the pilot report the issue to the base CO or make a police report, or worst the RC plane hit the heli….. Man I can't think about that !

I know I have no right to tell you guys what to do, but please put safety in mind when you enjoy the hobby. I hope I have not offend anybody, as my objective is to bring out the necessary safety awareness. Guys please don’t do it again and your assistant is much appreciated.

So if you are friend or part of the group that flew this evening, please advise each other to be more carefull when flying at JW field. Stop if you see our big brother (SAF) is in the air.

thank you and be part of the team

Fully agree with ya loyn! sometimes i do fly in the evenings during weekdays , whenever i see or hear the RSAF planes or heli's from far , i will bring my plane down asap.
The planes are so low that u could even see the pilot and the weird sounds emmiting from the planes.

Everyone of us who flies at JW definately dont want the place to be banned from flying. I hope those flyers this evening would understand the safety concerns.
    Safety comes 1st ya !

    FLy safe and always !

The heli that was approaching for landing this evening is a Chinnock.

Big and loud, from very far away. More than enough time to land the planes.

Despite calling out warnings, flying continues..

All the way till the Chinnock is over the old field, very much less than 100m away.. almost to the road then the r/c plane flew away from its path...

Yar skill good... but (The R/C pilot is definitely not a beginner, and is not a teen/young adult.)
      huh

What best we can do is to advise and provide ways to regulate activities on the field (freq board and next will be trush bag). Keeping my finger cross and hope for the best.....but if ppl still insists then.....is time to move on

          Second what lyon said...
Comon.. lets be more responsible! if any incident do happen... especially on a 40million dollar plane, somebod's head or heads will roll and the entire RC community will be shunned.

Land whenever the a real plane does an approach over the field.

Dont fly during weekdays(mon to sat). Fly on Sunday, when the airbase is closed. Even if you land YOUR KITE when a real aircraft approaching, your radio freq would more or less interrupt the aircraft instruments.

              Please Read !!!

              Hi all,

After reading the thread, I think I want to iterate some points here, Whether the members would like to listen or not listen is really up to you. I will try to answer any questions you may have, but pls dont argue back, but this but that....and trying to be funny. Currently,I'm just doing my parts as a member of daddyhobby......Anything more would consider official and I don't want to discuss on the forum.

Singapore has very congested airspace, no where in this world where you can find 5 airports within a span of 42 km wide. Now, every airport has their own aerodrome and normally from ground up to 3000ft. This aerodrome is very important to the airfield because anyone wants to come inside or flying within the aerodrome would require the Tower controller clearance. Such procedure is essential because it is to protect all aircraft taking-off or coming to land at the airfield is safe from other aircraft.

So, if you ever want to fly, rise, hang anything inside the aerodrome, you WILL need positive clearance from the authority. Since you all are civilian, you will need CAAS approval first. Big club like RMS, PPFC and etc would also need to write-in and request clearance in order to fly. Clearing to fly is based on case-by-case bias, and subjected to approval. Once approval, the CAAS will send issue an approval letter and concurrently sending out a NOTAM (Notice to airman) to inform all pilots on such activities, i.e where, when and up to what height and etc. Now back to "fly, rise, hang anything" inside the aerodrome, the example can be fly = 'RC'or private aircraft, hang = "airship" or ballon, rise = "high crane" and etc.

Now, this is the serious parts !!! In order to protect the aircraft, all fly, rise and hang would need approval and you got to stick to the height you have requested. For example, if you want to build something and rise the crane to certain height and you busted it. The authority can fine or/and jailed you for violating the law. This is the same as flying RC plane.

JWFF is inside TAB miliary base aerodrome and you guys are flying in the landing path of the aircraft; which happens to be the most cruical flying moment to all pilot. If there is anything should happen to the aircraft (note that a near missed would also consider), trust me, this is no points telling the authority that you don't know or you are still young and blah, blah.....

So can all don't fly ? It is still alright if there is no military aircraft or heli , i.e late Sat afternoon or Sunday. JUST dont' do it on the weekdays or when you heard a jet roars or heli-blade on a Saturday or Sunday. This included the people flying at Woodland and punggol point. Therefore, My point is that I know it is very anxious for us to try out our new plane and test their performance, but please hold your horses till weekend.

Lastly, we all wish to have fun and safe flying without any authority step-in. However, we must also ensure them that we are all safe when flying and we don't put other people at risk. If you don't do that, you will be surprise to see that this forums will no longer exist on a one fine day.

              Best of Luck,

                    Many are.

The original group of flyers that started flying there rarely fly there alone. Someone is always on the lookout for incoming planes/helis. And we flew in a more constrained fashion in the smaller field. Never too high or too far.

And if needed, we will even crash land our planes to prevent mishaps.
And we always make it a point to sweep the field to pick up any debris/garbage.

                    But now
                    huh

For the Chinnok "incident", only adults were flying that evening.

We are trying to promote resposible flying. Not create a big hu-ha. Neither are we trying finger point who did this or that.

In fact, whenever anyone asked me where is this field.. I will tell them "if you want to fly there, make sure you land your planes when you see full size planes/helis approaching in the air, cause it is in the landing path. And never fly alone there."

                          --

To summerise... just fly safely. This is a small flying committee. We are out to have fun, but fly responsibly. Regardless of where we fly, there is bound to have some risk/danger. Think before you act anything reckless. Risk your own planes, rather than risk lifes, public property and the whole flying committee.

Since flying at JWFF is a potentially hazardous, can somebody recommend an area that we can fly without posing any threat to anyone?

And Yes, it is true that the military planes do fly on Sunday too. So, if we were to take precaution to fly when the military is not flying, then basically 7 days a week is a no-fly at JWFF.

On a different note, I seriously doubt, our transmitter can do any harm or create interference to the military equipment and planes. If they do, then the 40millions dollars heli, is not worth the money. And you will see terrorist not making missles, but buying a whole field of transmitters and turning on while the planes are flying by.

So I think, the crucial part here is, at what height are you flying? If you fly anywhere above a 10 storey building, then it can be a threat because I believe the military planes will take into account the height of surrounding building, structures, highway and trees.

Of course, bringing the rc planes and heli down is the sure way to avoid any incidents. I am not sure, why the "spotted" group did not bring their "bird" down when caution to. but I am sure most of us out there when we first got our driving license, we probably do not hear anything from our passenger when we drive, because we are so focus in the driving.
In the same note, that group(maybe new) may be too focus on their flying that they are oblivious to the surrounding, even when someone is shouting at them. So, the best approach in this situation is to quickly approach anyone and tell them to lower their "birds" when there is incoming.

I feel that everyone just wanted to have a place to enjoy the hobby with everybody else. And new comers who heard the good friendly thing about Daddy hobby at JWFF may not be aware of the ground rules or etiquette. So, it may be a good thing to always take note of new comers, welcome them and guide them along to the do's and don'ts at JWFF or any other fields. Or maybe give an information handout to those who buy the Team daddy t-shirts or even have a section in the forum on rules at flying field.
With gentle reminders, we don't turn away new friends and we can get to keep the flying zone.
