    please help...

today went for my first day of work at pizza hut. oh my god, what a depressing day. i spent 7hours washing dishes without a break or meal, being paid a measly $3.50 an hour. got cheated by them. $4 is only for holidays with all the extra parts. tried making a bit of food, but got ****ed by them because i couldn't remember the whole receipe for everything in the menu. the schedule is 6-7 hours a day, 5days a week until closing, at 11pm. after taking into account the transport time, i reach home past midnight and set off for sch at 6.30 the next day. no break at all, then today all i ate was breakfast. the thing is i have to give one week's notice before i leave. today itself was already a mental breakdown. i never got to see anything outside the filthy kitchen for almost 7 hours, never got to sit down. my bro says if i resign tmr, i can forfeit my pay today. taht is fine with me($24 for washing dishes for 7hours non-stop). the thing i'm concerned about is he said they can sue me...guys, you all got more experience on job issues like this...please help me... what will happen if i quit?

I started work in 1991....was working in a jam studio and was paid $400 a month...no CPF...no allowance...starts at 10 in the morning to about 10.30 at night...well...I took it as a learning school...learnt everything I can and when oppotunity knocked I hopped on and went for another company...had to go army and when I came out..went to another company for interview...asked for $1200...was given $900 for the first 3 mths....in the 1st mth alone I didn;t sleep for a week....just napped like 30 mins or so a day...they were doing some reaaaaaaaally big project..well...pulled through that and finally got my pay rised...when I left the job after 5 yrs...I was getting like $3000+...started with nothing...no cert...no experience...worked my way up....

Brandon...not everything in this world is a bed of roses....and trust me...this pizza hut thingy is but the first of many many hurdles that we must get through in life.....

My advise is to be patience and see if it pays off in the end...well...maybe not in terms of $$ but it'll definitely make you a better man....

I say give it a shot man..it's only your first day...and you have to learn to work in the kitchen before you come out to serve...start low..and work your way up...

That's part and parcel of working life.. you will need to get use to it. If you can't tahan, other place is not much better. $ is hard to come by.

If you really can't tahan, even for your much beloved heli, then quit.. and tong 7 days....

Yes, you can be sued if they want to (if you don't serve the notice). The norm is, you will need to pay them back 7 days worth of pay.... And no, I doubt they will accept installments.
      huh

I once worked in McDonalds long long time ago for $2.00 an hour. But within a month I learnt everything. From kitchen to counter to moping the lobby. I also started with kitchen work, making cheese burger and big macs then slowly proceed on. So I must say those unfortunate fellows who have eaten my uncooked cheese burgers or big macs, I'm sorry. But if you have not noticed its uncooked, then good for you, cause you are an ANIMAL!!!

Hey my lesson here is to make the best of what u have.

Even if u joined already but dont like the job, at least you can learn how to make pizza. I still dont know how to do it!!!

Sorry to hear your plight. I look things from another angle, I don mean to say there is no prospect in pizza hut. If he would choose to study and work at the same time given not much choice, I personally feel he should find alternative job and maximise his time for salary. Some job pay slightly better w the same effort, some job rewards proportionally w effort. Look at yourself and see what you good at and offer your service in that industry. If you can only afford hard work, I am not sure if those server is better paid or not. Else, try a fast food outlet near yr place like Mc etc.....

Let me know if you decided to quit and want to approach the outlet mgr, I volunteer to go w you to sort things out ....

              Nice move!

Brandon: Please take it easy on yourself. I washed dishes and cleaned the fast food chains before. I know the feeling, it feels degrading and dirty....initially.

But you have a choice to take positively whatever hits you as an experience that might make you a better person in any situation.

Trust me, the rest are trying to tell you the same thing. There are worst scenerios awaiting in life.

                Dun worry Brandon.

They won't sue you over this issue. They are just trying to scare you. It won't make economical sense for them to sue you. Did you have to sign anything before you took this job? Did you read between the lines and the small words at every corner of the contract if there was any?

We're all behind you on this one. Brandon, if you are able to take this kinda treatment, it will pay off when you serve NS. Just stay sharp and alert. I gather u've not been in the kitchen often at home? Used to get F###ed all the time by my mum. Now 3rd chef of the house. We all started from wiping dishes, then washing dishes then went on to assisting whoever's cooking etc..... And that's only the kitchen.... In the Army U can expect to clean toilet for up to 6 hours a day.[assuming 3 times standby area cleaning a day, 2 hours to do 100% job]

The returns aren't high for ur job, i think it's betta u leave.

-> Mike: I'm damn impressed. U really power siah. Really De' Daddy. Thanks.

Sorry guys, I am not trying to be a hero.

Everyone need to work hard for their penny. All I am trying to say is maximise your effort. I hate to see ppl putting in 100% effort and get 30% payout

Just to add on to what mentioned by Ray, nv heard an organisation sue a student for breaching contracts / employment. But don abuse this authority, having hard time now is 10 times having hard times later.

PS: I hate to wash the cook house in my NS ..... sucks still goto throw the leftover in rubbish dump. .... dam smelly..... but that make me a stronger man

                  Cheers

                  Mike

True, cause the work needed is too much, and the cost incurred will be way above when they get in return. However, if the employee is "too much", and the employer is a @$$4073, then.. the @$$4073 employer might just want to get back at the "too much" employee.

-- If both are iron headed.. they bang harder.

1 week is a very short notice. Speak to the manager (nicely), maybe can get it waive altogether.

Anyway... just don't try it in NS... there not much point... most likely just get to sign extra "extras".

                      Hi

If u really hate that job, then no point staying there. If u really wanted to leave, then give then 1week notice and endure for it.

Who knows? U can find better part time job elsewhere.

Think of the bright side, u now know how to make Pizza for your love one!!. Impress your girlfriend.

the main problem is actually the closing times. i'm working near town area. and the shift officially ends at around 11.20. even the manager herself said rarely do ppl go home at 11.20. usually about 11.40. then the journey home is another 20-30mins, and by the time i would reach home it'll be past midnight. with less than five hours of sleep, i'll have to set off for school by 6.30 the next morning, and school is until 3, with an hour to rush down to town to start work, and the cycle begins again. working the dishes itself is not so bad. but to do it for 7hours without break, already one day its beginning to take a toll on my back. i'll be going down to speak with the manager, to see what can be worked out...

Just bear with it man.... new guys without friends there sure kena tekan one. this is working life. late nights and short sleeping hours are the norm. after you get the hang of washing the plates, u'll get smoother and a lot faster, that's where your break time will come in.

i've done many odd jobs and i have to say yours is one of the easiest. security guard - $50 for 12 hours of walking non-stop with proper body posture. u get 1/2hr for meals and water. think it's easy? wait until you try it.
pasa malam seller - $50 10am to 12pm. have to do delivery also, no transport allowance.
rushing between 2 jobs everyday for 1 week without going home, 24hrs a day, dun talk about much sleep. yes i do get $100 a day that way, but how long can you last?

just be glad man. i've sent pizza before and had an accident, the next thing i know when i'm back in the outlet----- they pass me another key and another stack of pizza... $3.50/hr......

harder enviroments will make u a stronger person, enjoy yourself
